Encounters With Memory is a group show, comprised of ten Danish artists. Lise Uhrskov and Mazja Hillestrøm (UHHi Projects) have invited eight artists to join them in creating artworks that interpret their Encounter with Memory.
Encounters With Memory “I suppose it is submerged realities that give to dreams their curious air of hyper-reality. But perhaps there is something else as well, something nebulous, gauze-like, through which everything one sees in a dream seems, paradoxically, much clearer. A pond becomes a lake, a breeze becomes a storm,
a handful of dust is a desert, a grain of sulphur in the blood is a volcanic inferno.” “At the time I could no more believe my eyes than I can now trust my memory.”W.G. Sebald, The Rings of Saturn Encounters with Memory, is an exploration of reality, memory and fantasy and how they are intricately connected, but also how they can stand alone and be looked upon as separate entities. The lines between submerged realities and dream-like states are
often intertwined. Is memory merely a myth or is it a new form of reality that we are recreating? Through the artists’ process of confronting and representing the worldthey are able build upon their own memories and perceptions of reality. But what kind of “reality” is represented and what modes of mythmaking, storytelling and documentation are used to interpret the starting point, the outcome and the process in between. How do we as individuals project what we see and remember onto the world around us, and what drives this?
